The spirit of Nelson Mandela Day came alive at the Ipopeng Old Age Centre in Moremela as the Department of Economic Development and Tourism, together with its agencies and the Thaba Chweu Local Municipality, dedicated 67 minutes of community service to improving the lives of local residents while promoting responsible living among young people.
The event saw government officials, community members and stakeholders roll up their sleeves to make a lasting difference at the centre. Volunteers constructed a garden shade net, planted seedlings, painted the facility and donated essential items including an electric stove, office furniture, tables and chairs, a JoJo water tank, gardening equipment and painting materials.
Addressing the gathering, Executive Mayor Cllr. Mogotle Friddah Nkadimeng reflected on the municipality's commitment to honouring the promise made during the previous Mandela Day celebrations to return and complete outstanding work at the centre.
She praised the partnership with the Department of Economic Development and Tourism, saying it demonstrated how collaboration between different spheres of government can improve the lives of communities.
Quoting the late President Nelson Mandela, the Mayor reminded those in attendance that, "The greatest use of our hands is not in what they gather, but in what they give," encouraging everyone to continue serving others beyond Mandela Day.
Head of the Department, Ms Immy Serakalala, said older persons are custodians of knowledge, wisdom and experience who deserve to be treated with dignity, care and respect. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to the wellbeing of the residents of Ipopeng Old Age Centre.
The event was attended by representatives from the Mogane Traditional Authority, councillors, CEOs of the Department's agencies, SASSA, SAPS, Community Work Programme (CWP) participants, members of the Moremela community and Miss Mpumalanga 2026, Masibulele Mndebele.
Speaking to the youth, Mndebele delivered a powerful message urging young people to avoid alcohol abuse and gambling. She encouraged those under the age of 18 to stay away from both activities, focus on their education, participate in sports and seek guidance from trusted adults whenever they face personal challenges.
"Alcohol and gambling will not make your problems disappear; instead, they make them worse," she said.
The Mpumalanga Economic Regulator (MER) also used the occasion to educate community members about responsible drinking and gambling while providing information on the legal processes for obtaining liquor licences for those wishing to operate bottle stores.
Community representative Jan Malibe welcomed the initiative and expressed concern about the challenges facing young people.
"Siyazama kuhlala nebantu labasha sikhulume nabo, mara bayasihlula," he said, highlighting the need for continued engagement with the youth. He added that he was grateful for the event and the positive impact it had on the community.
Residents also expressed appreciation for the day's activities, describing the initiative as a meaningful demonstration of government working hand in hand with communities to restore hope, dignity and social responsibility.
The Department's agencies, including MTPA, MEGA and MER, also showcased the services they provide, ensuring that government services are brought closer to the people.
The Mandela Day celebration served as a reminder that meaningful partnerships, compassion and active citizenship remain essential in building stronger and more caring communities, while inspiring young people to make responsible choices for a brighter future.
